But he has power his enemies do not comprehend. As they will learn soon enough. Then, despite all her promises to herself about not showing fear, she gasped. For the valley floor, which she had thought was covered in a dark forest, was alive with movement.
And as her sense of what she was seeing changed, she realized she was hearing sounds, faint and far-off, of banging and pounding and shouting, of a deep, rhythmic drumbeat, and there were fires burning all over the valley, black smoke rising into the sky; what Emma had at first taken to be trees were not trees at all but figures, Imps and Screechers and who knew what else, thousands upon thousands of them. She was looking at an army. There is little time. The day, which had been warm and sunny minutes before, was now blackened by clouds, and a cold wind howled through the alleys, sending small tornadoes of dust spiraling upward.
Pym said. It is all we can do. Now hurry. A part of the magical world, the town did not appear on any map or atlas; it was hidden away, invisible to all save a select few. Kate reckoned it was the fourteenth or fifteenth she had lost exact count such place that she and Michael and the wizard had visited in the three days since Emma had been abducted and they themselves had fled from the elfish forest at the bottom of the world.
Additionally the three siblings have found out that The Books of Beginning are tearing the world apart and there is only one way to save the world; first the Dire Magnus much be defeated and then the Books must be destroyed.
This was a well done conclusion to this series. There is a lot of action and adventure. The book changes point of view a lot, alternating between Emma, Kate, Gabriel, and Michael. I really enjoyed watching Emma journey to the Land of the Dead. I continue to enjoy the tension between Kate and Rafe the Dire Magnus. I loved some of the scenes with Wilhelmina the elf princess Michael has a crush on fighting as a dragon. My only complaint is that the book felt really long.
I think it was paced pretty well, it just felt like it was a long read. It was almost like two books were smooshed together in this one book. Overall this was a great conclusion to this middle grade fantasy series.
I enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the action. I would definitely recommend this series to middle grade fantasy fans out there. Stephens did a great job of tying everything up and I am curious to see what he writes next.
Aug 25, Claire rated it really liked it. When is this coming out? At least give me a title and a cover! I have been patiently waiting since last October, and there is still no news yet! There is a title for the book! It sounds so cool it almost makes up for all the time it will take before the book comes out. View 2 comments. Oct 29, Kim marked it as to-read.
Excited to finally learn the pub date for this - sad to know that it is August of - but at least now I can stop hunting the date! Oh, and the name The Black Reckoning! Jul 20, Polly Sands rated it really liked it. A brilliant series, the last one of the trilogy took us absolutely ages. Great battle scenes, romance, humour, conflict, characters, action, sense of place and time. It took me quite a while to finish "The Black Reckoning". One thing that I did really like - and this is something I already mentioned in my review of the first two books of the trilogy though I must admit that I can only talk about the German versions - is the way this book is presented.
A lovely cover, a nice title and an interesting It took me quite a while to finish "The Black Reckoning". A lovely cover, a nice title and an interesting summary on the back of the book. These things make it stand out in a book store and I imagine that it attracted more than a few interested looks.
Nevertheless, the content of this book was not as good as I would've expected. But first things first! This books focuses on Emma quite a lot but still way less than I anticipated.
And, to be honest, I'm not too sure how I feel about this. What I found really interesting when reading the first book was the promise that we'd have three equal main characters: Kate, Michael and Emma, each of them a protagonist in one of the three novels. This is, however, not what happens. Yet it is obvious that the overall protagonist is Kate. Kenyon alumni working in food and drink industries are sharing their go-to happy hour pairings.

Burkam, writing for The Horn Book Magazine , felt that there was a lot going on in the novel, but Stephens managed to masterfully pull it off.

As the fabric of time begins to fray, she becomes the final piece of an extraordinary puzzle. Then he turned and walked out. As if her exhaustion had been there waiting for her, Kate felt a heaviness settle on her shoulders. She sat down on the bed. Another moment, and she might have fallen over. Well, Michael said, Ill guess take the other room.
He turned back at the door. But Its not that. And while she had meant to ask if he too had sensed the presence of some great power in the Citadel, instead, looking at her brothers face and feeling more than ever the new, awful distance between them, she asked, Is something wrong? Are you angry at me?
Kate said nothing. The silence stretched out. Michael stared at the floor, and when he spoke again, his voice was different. It was his voice this time, his real one. When I use the Chronicle, I live another persons whole life. All their memories and feelings, for a few seconds, theyre mine. I shouldve told you before.
I dont want it to happen; it just does. Most of it I cant remember afterward. Its like trying to remember a dream. But some things you do remember. And when you brought me back. Michael looked up, and the instant he met her eyes, Kate knew what he would say. That boy in the bell tower, the one who became the Dire Magnus. Kates throat was as dry as paper. You love him. Kate didnt know what threw her more, that Michael had said this or that he had said it so simply and directly.
The old Michael, the one shed left in Baltimore a week before, would have danced around and basically done all he could to avoid mentioning the subject of feelings, his own or anyone elses. You love him, he went on.
I mean, you know hes the Dire Magnus. You know hes the enemy. But you still love him. No, I dont. Kate was gripping the edge of the bed with both hands. I dont. I mean you love him, Rafe. And he is the Dire Magnus. Theyre the same person. Why are you saying this? Whats You cant save him. You have to know that. Now it was Kates turn to stare at the floor. For as shocked as shed been by Michaels declaration that she loved Rafe, the boy she had met a hundred years in the past, who had saved her life and in so doing had become the Dire Magnus, no part of her denied the truth of it.
How often in the past daysdespite jumping around the world, despite being hounded by Screechers, despite Emma being gonehad she closed her eyes and pictured Rafes face before her, or remembered riding with him on the top of the elevated train as the wind bit into her cheeks or sitting in the warm, smoky 27 How many times had she told herself to stop thinking of him, to forget him, only to be drawn back by the simple memory of her hand folded inside his?
She said, Have you told Dr. And I wont. But youve got to choose. Emma or him. You cant save both. You have to choose. Then he turned and walked out of the room, leaving her alone.
