I also found out after being tested for food allergies that I was highly allergic to tomatoes, peas and walnuts which is in most of the Jenny Craig frozen dinners and was the cause of my year long jaw and neck pain. When I stopped eating the frozen foods with these ingrediants my pain disappeared within two days. But without Jenny Craig I gained my weight back to lbs and realized that whether I liked it or not, I was going to have to write everything I ate down and start doing the work of counting those calories every day, every meal, for the rest of my life!
It was so depressing but it was going to be my New Years resolution for Finally, a plan that meant I only had to count calories and be careful every other day and then I could celebrate my effort on the feast day - it sounded like a dream! But this dream worked for me and as of July 12th I am back to lbs and have been easily maintaining it for 11 weeks.
Everyone has their own approach on the diet day, but for me I found that if I ate my calories too early in the day I wouldn't be able to make it until the next day to eat. Since I had eaten well the day before, skipping breakfast was fairly easy and I usually didn't start to feel hungry until around noon.
So the only "will power" I had to endure usually lasted about 4 hours because if I could wait until about 4 o'clock to eat I felt had made it and my diet day was essentially over. After I would eat a calorie meal maybe a tuna sandwich and savor every bite!
Then I would wait another couple of hours and have my remaining calorie snack - such as Wholly Guacamole and chips, or Kefir with Splenda poured over fruit.
Today, the maintainance plan of calories only 3 days a week is not nearly as hard as the calories I ate everyday for almost a year with Jenny Craig because now I get to enjoy feast days every other day so I am not perpetually hungry. I can eat at restaurants along with my husband now and still fit into those size 6 pants! And I don't have to write anything down or have to know exactly how many calories I just ate at that restaurant! I feel free from the constant fear at every meal that I was eating too much - even when I wasn't!
This is why I hope, Dr Varady, that you know that I will always be greatful to you and your book. Thank you so much! Eodd Weight Loss Program. Every Other Day Diet Scam. Every Other Day Diet Plan. Every Other Day Diet Ebook. Every Other Day Diet Snapp.
Eating Every Other Day Diet. Every Other Day Diet Review. Every Other Day Diet Download. Both Jon and Janis are formerly obese individuals who were able to lose weight without turning to surgery. However, the book is not necessary to do the diet which is so inherently simple - though it may be quite helpful for some - as essential information can be found online.
Predictably, the book does focus on weight loss, despite discussing the numerous other health benefits of the diet. Johnson dubs the major gene that the diet activates SIRT1 the 'skinny gene' and I find this a bit gimmicky. I realize that many people myself included are almost obsessively interested in being slim, but I truly think the other health benefits are much more interesting and worthwhile. Also, people who are happy with their weight may be turned off by what they perceive to be a weight-loss oriented 'diet', as opposed to an eating pattern that will revolutionize their lives both physically and mentally.
A significant portion of the book goes into general nutrition and exercise information, and while it's mostly solid enough, I think there are better books for such principles. For example, I disagree with Dr. J's assessment of red meat, cholesterol, and saturated fats - all things I consider perfectly healthy and woefully demonized in the public eye. I appreciate that the diet alone will not gain one optimal health - and it does not exist in a vacuum - even though one can lose weight and improve one's health by doing nothing else, exercise and actual food consumption still matter.
But again - there are better sources for both, and Dr. J does acknowledge this to an extent. The down day meal plans 30 days of such days! The recipes, on the other hand, are actually pretty decent. Standalone or for up days, they could indeed be useful. As I said initially, while the book may not be necessary in order to do the diet, it can be a useful tool and as a alternate-day eating fanatic and health-obsessed scientist, I learned many interesting tidbits reading the book.
I imagine that anyone seriously contemplating the diet as a permanent lifestyle choice will want to have read this. View 2 comments. An interesting alternative for a diet in a well-written, compact book with good documentation, resources to find out more, and with plans any reader although if with serious medical problems, check with doctors first can apply to make their own version of this that will work for them.
Essentially, you'll have two days in this diet that you repeat as long as needed. Day one is the eat less day. But you can also calculate the exact numbers with the math or links provided. The next day you eat as you would normally, so nothing is forbidden. Just don't eat like a pig on all-included buffet on a cruise ship. But if you want a burger or some pizza or a pint, go for it. Then just repeat day 1, day 2, day 1, day 2, rinse and repeat.
What this will cause is your body to switch on SIRT1-gene, also known as the skinny gene. The weight loss is one of the benefits of this alternate-day diet, other benefits include helping your body repair itself from many conditions that cause inflammation, e. Unlike with regular diets, your body will not go to starvation mode, as you keep "cheating" it with the on and off days. There's less temptation when nothing is forbidden just eat it on your day 2 , and your body gets enough food on those days so it does not think it's being starved.
You'll also get the benefits of fasting -- there's a lot more about it in the book, so have a fast read. You could also go to zero calories on your day 1, but most people would find that very boring in a long run. I like the concept, and will give it a try.
Hopefully gone with my eczema. Let's see how it goes. The only problem I find is with the recipes. Most provide up to kcal for the day, which is quite high for the off days. Also while Johnson first mentions why it's a good idea to avoid some foods like dairy milk, many recipes use dairy milk in them.
And nearly everything uses chicken stock - so I won't be trying out a single recipe from this book as they are. But fortunately replacing that stock with dashi or vegetarian stock doesn't really take any effort.

Feb 05, Ed rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Anyone who is interested in another approach to weight loss. Shelves: in-inventory-billings , reviewed , self-help-how-to-recipes. It arrived three weeks ago and I am already 8 pounds lighter.
The text is understandable and instantly usable. She does not spend a lot of time justifying the diet like so many books of this genre do. Her research and anecdotal evidence is compelling. She has included a number of recipes that I, personally, won't avail myself of. I prefer buying low-cal frozen meals at the supermarket. I was able to start the diet the day the book arrived.
I've personally modified her instructions a little by using an app, "myfitnesspal. Super Bowl Sunday excepted. Her instructions for maintaining the weight loss seem practical and doable. That's always the test of any weight loss regimen.
Give it a try, if other things haven't worked for you. What have you got to lose? Jan 19, Lei rated it really liked it. The book is well written in an easy to follow style. Varady is a scientist and bases her writing on her own research and the research of others.
The evidence is compelling and the advice on how to follow the diet is well structured. It's also very clear how a maintenance regime will ensure no subsequent weight gain. Varady doesn't really acknowledge how people with disordered eating or eating disorders will cope on this diet. I know that my eating is disordered and I can overeat substantially. So The book is well written in an easy to follow style.
I've started with every-other-day fasting just this week and I couldn't fit in a strict day-on, day-off approach because of commitments involving food!
I already had in my diary but I did fast for 3 days out of 7 and I lost 3 lbs in that week. It's early days, but initial results are promising. I was also surprised that the fasting days were not as arduous as I was expecting. Yes I was hungry, but it was easy to accept that and not to be tempted. I've found it better for me to eat my one meal in the evening and I intend to keep pursuing this approach until I am back at my fighting weight! What I would have liked to have seen more of is some additional detail - certain facts are presented that left me wanting to know more.
For example, she states that someone who is at a given weight and who has always weighed that amount has a higher metabolic rate than someone of the same weight but who has been overweight and has dieted. I wanted to know if that was a reversible characteristic or that person would always have a dented metabolic rate.
My overall view of this book is that it clearly sets the case for every-other-day fasting cal limit and provides enough guidance for it to be easy to follow. It also shows how a maintenance fast day cal is a sustainable approach. Dec 11, Carol Bakker rated it liked it Shelves: , onmyshelf , food.
This eating plan every-other-day alternating calories and eating "normally" seems tailored for my all-or-nothing personality. Varady warns that the first two weeks can be difficult, but after that most people don't experience acute hunger pains on their calorie day, to which I can give a hearty "amen" of corroboration.
As a book this one seems to follow the template of diet books. You know, the little box with "Gerta's story" at the bottom of the page.
